Pakistan committed to objectives of SAARC charter: PM | Pakistan
KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Shahid Hakan Abbasi said on Tuesday that Pakistan attaches great importance to the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and is committed to the principles and purposes of its Charter.
In his speech at the SAARC Secretariat, Abbasi stated that Pakistan had always sought to make SAARC a vivid means of regional cooperation based on the principle of sovereign equality.
. He also noted that SAARC has great potential for strengthening the economies of member countries and promoting cooperation in various areas of mutual interest.
He stressed that the organization should continue to strive to achieve economic, cultural and social growth in the region. He stressed the need to increase the level of interaction between SAARC member states for a prosperous region.
Abbasi said that Pakistan at all SAARC meetings expressed its conviction that the safe and peaceful situation in South Asia is crucial for the development and prosperity of the region.
He said that as host of the next SAARC summit, Pakistan expects an early summit and assured that the country will play a positive role in further strengthening regional cooperation.
SAARC Secretary General Amjad Hussain B. Sial said that Pakistan plays an important role in SAARC and previously held two summits. He said that the holding of the SAARC summits signified a new impetus among the member states.
Later, Abbasi planted a sazhen of pine in the premises of the SAARC Secretariat.
The premiere left Nepal for Pakistan.
