PM, Nawaz mull over nominees for Senate chairmanship: sources | Pakistan
LAHORE: Prime Minister Shahid Hagan Abbasi met with PMP-N Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday to exchange views on the forthcoming poll for the Senate chairmen and deputy chairmen, the sources reported Geo News .
According to reports, several senators of the party came under consideration during the meeting held at Javi Umra residence in Nawaz.
Nawaz also instructed Abbasi to stay in close contact with party members, sources said.
Senator Mirza Mohammad Afridi, who was elected an independent senator from Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), joined the party on Monday after meeting with Nawaz.
The PPS declares support for eight FATA senators
The Pakistani Peoples Party earlier stated that it had the support of eight senators from FATA for the coveted chairman's word and vice chairman of the upper house parliament.
This development appeared on Tuesday after a meeting of PPS leaders Dr. Qayyum Soomro and Senator Salem Mandvival and independent FATA senators.
According to sources, the FATA senators demanded support from PPP for tribal rights in exchange for the support of the chairmen of the Senate and vice-chairmen.
One of the four senators elected on Saturday, Mirza Afridi, reportedly joined the Pakistan Muslim Nawaz League (PML-N) on Monday.
During polls in the Senate on Saturday, independent candidates from PML-N became the largest party in the upper house of parliament.
The party collected a total of 15 seats in the Senate across the country in accordance with unofficial and unverified results, taking its full strength in the Senate with 104 members to 33.
Despite that , reduction in the Senate to 21 seats, the party seeks to take the slots of the chairman and deputy chairman with the help of allies and independent persons.
